14 ways to grow your email list as a local business

The best email lists are built one real customer at a time. These are the ways that work for local businesses, from the till to Instagram.

In person

  • A QR code by the till that opens your sign-up page
  • Table cards or beer mats with a QR code
  • Ask at the end of an appointment, when people are happiest
  • A sign-up tick box on booking or order forms (unticked by default)
  • A free treat on their next visit for signing up
  • Sign-up sheets at events and markets, with a clear note about what they'll get

Online

  • A sign-up link in your Instagram and TikTok bio
  • A link on your Google Business Profile
  • A pop-up or banner on your website
  • Post a preview of your next newsletter on social: "Sign up to get the rest"
  • Run a poll or competition that needs an email to enter

Word of mouth

  • A forward-to-a-friend line in every email
  • A bring-a-friend offer for subscribers
  • Partner with a neighbouring business for a joint giveaway

Give people a reason

"Join our newsletter" doesn't excite anyone. "Be first to hear when the cinnamon buns are on" does. Say what they'll get and how often.

Your own sign-up page

Every iynbox Business account comes with a page at yourbusiness.iynbox.com where customers sign up and read your past emails. Put its QR code anywhere.

Questions

Can I collect emails on paper?

Yes, as long as the form clearly says what people are signing up for, and you keep the forms as a record of consent.

Is it OK to offer a discount for signing up?

Yes. Make it clear they're joining your marketing list, and let them unsubscribe any time.
